Introduction of Income Tax
War and taxes have often gone together. The destruction caused by World War II made reconstruction, social welfare and education immediate priorities for the Government. In 1948, income tax took effect as a new source of revenue. Despite initial problems, revenue derived from income tax allowed for an expansion in social welfare spending. However, poor housing conditions and widespread unemployment remained significant problems.
