Offences

Peh Eng Chen (“Peh”), a 48-year-old director of Swift Garage Pte Ltd (“Swift Garage”) and Xing Heng Projects Pte Ltd (“Xing Heng”), has been convicted of Goods & Services Tax (“GST”) offences. Swift Garage was in the business of importing and retailing motor vehicles, whilst Xing Heng was in the business of property renovations.

Peh was convicted of:

• 1 charge of understating the output tax in Swift Garage's GST return
• 1 charge of deliberately concealing Xing Heng's liability to be registered for GST
• 1 charge of providing a false answer to the Comptroller of GST
  

The total amount of GST undercharged was $300,350.

Court sentence

He was sentenced to 66 weeks’ imprisonment and ordered to pay a penalty of $901,051. The penalty represents three times the total amount of GST undercharged for the convicted offences.
